My Story

Norman Edwards Jr. is a movement-forward jazz bandleader, drummer, and educator dedicated to the power of groove as a shared human language. Known for his high-energy performances and interactive stage presence, he creates musical experiences that invite audiences into the rhythm, elevate collective energy, and leave listeners feeling lighter.

At the center of Norman’s artistic vision is the belief that groove connects people beyond words. Whether through subtle head nods, clapping, call-and-response, or full-room movement, his performances encourage audiences to become part of the music rather than simply observe it. His family, and mentors at LaGuardia High School, Queens College, Renegades, Music in The Center and Manhattan School of Music are his inspiration in this regard.

Norman leads two primary projects that express different sides of this philosophy. SpinKicK, his longest-running ensemble, explores the dance-driven edge of modern jazz, blending deep pocket grooves, funk influence, and improvisational freedom into an electrifying live experience. His newer project, The Norman Edwards Jr. Excitement Band, channels the spirit of hard-swinging jazz with powerful ensemble energy, collective lift, and joyful audience engagement. He runs, Combo Breaker with Alex Lopez, a Video Game Music project with high energy performances. He also works as a sideman, performing with Alphonso Horne, Karen Marie, Mark Meadows, Shareef Clayton, Jenn Jade, Endea Owens and Patrick Bartley Jr.

In addition to performing, Norman is a dedicated educator who shares his insights on groove, bandleading, and musical interaction with the next generation of musicians. His teaching explores the relationship between rhythm, emotional expression, and the energy exchange between performers and audiences. He currently teaches at Manhattan School of Music, Jazz @ Lincoln Center, group and private lessons in person through The Shareef Clayton Music Foundation and through ZOOM.

Whether on stage, in the classroom, or in collaboration with fellow artists, Norman Edwards Jr. approaches music as both an artistic craft and a communal experience — one rooted in rhythm, connection, and the transformative power of groove.
